the british are coming

When I think of British fashion I think of swoon worthy fashionistas like Alexa Chung, Kate Moss, and Cara Delevingne. Basically, the creme dela crème of cool girls. Not mention it is where Topshop originated. For me that is the equivalent to my kid in a candy store fantasy. So it should come as no surprise that I’m very drawn to UK fashion. Although I consider myself to primarily identify with southern Californian style (kimonos and cutoffs – yes please!), I have a special place in my heart for the styling genius that happens on the other side of the Atlantic. But of course there isn’t just one type of look that is found in the UK. But what all British style does have in common is that it is governed by the weather. So think lots of tights with skirts and plimsolls instead of flip-flops. Another common thread in British style is the expertly executed “thrown-on” feel to what they wear. They are able to mix prints and patterns and pull it off effortlessly. The key to British style is keeping it casual and never looking too polished. It’s about adding a twist of something not expected like wearing something really cutting edge with your grandmother’s brooch thrown on it. Or rocking a floral tea dress with an oversized, cashmere or tweed cardigan. Think girly with an edge to it. I tend to be a Plain Jane in the print department, so for my British inspired look I’m wearing this tartan dress by the UK based brand Motel Rocks. I added my casual twist with boots and a pair of socks.

Does this top look familiar? Yes, I did wear it in my last post! So let's talk turtlenecks...those sweaters where the material rushes passed your collarbone with complete disregard and creeps up your neck. Some might call them old-fashioned and dated, but I call them timeless and elegant. I am happy to see their reemergence in fashion this winter. The last time I remember being into turtlenecks was back in early 2000 when I had a plethora of them in pink, white, you name it. And although I have dabbled a bit in the past year, I feel like this is the turtleneck’s time to shine once again. The chunky, cable knit variety will always be my favorite, but I’m very into the new ways I’ve been seeing them styled. One look I’m loving is a turtleneck underneath a buttoned-up collared shirt. Another is layering a turtleneck sweater underneath, gasp, another sweater! If I have not yet convinced you, may I remind you of how Katherine Hepburn and Diane Keaton perfected the art of the turtleneck. Whether you like them short, long, oversized, or in the form of a dress; there’s one out there for everyone and new ways of styling them to be experimented with.

pacsun holiday

It's literally just now hitting me that it's Christmas. Maybe it's because I'm back home at my mom's house where there are decorations a-plenty including a snowman that will burst into song even when a slight breeze rolls by. We have a love/hate relationship. This year will be my first Christmas sans both by brothers. It's a major bummer but I guess it's an occupational hazard of getting older. Can't we all just stay little forever? Also, if you're like me you aren't quite finished with that pesky holiday shopping yet.  I’ve been living in LA now for almost 5 months and feel like an update is due. Moving to a new city is always a little daunting, but hopefully, more exciting than anything. It still feels new and exciting – thank goodness. I definitely don’t have any regrets about my exodus north. I needed a change of scenery and being in LA has given me a chance to connect with so many new people I probably wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. Plus, a drive back home to Orange County ain’t no thang. Unless it’s during rush hour, in which case, it is a huge thang. I’m still trying to find my bearings in terms of what will be my next step career wise so keep your fingers crossed for me in that department. Since we are talking about where I live, I thought why not show you a bit of where I lay my head at night. I adoringly call it my little bird’s nest in the sky. These photos capture how you would find me at home – wearing an oversized anything with messy hair. Hush hush about a brush. Hopefully my next LA update will be more exciting with new life changes to share. But other than that, I’m still completely enamored by the tacos and pho down the street, traffic is a horrific beast, and the sunshine will never get old.

wild thing

This weekend, albeit painfully chilly, was pretty productive. I finally saw "Catching Fire" which was obviously the highlight. No but seriously, how good is that movie?! I'm caving and reading Mockingjay because I'm not going to even pretend for a minute that I can wait another year for the next movie. Another highlight was the For Love & Lemons sample sale this morning. All the credit goes to my amiga for dragging me out of bed when all I wanted to do was stay hidden beneath my little nest of blankets. Twas so painful, but oh so worth it. Speaking of worth it, this outfit from Lindsay Lou has been on heavy rotation. Everyone needs to own a pair of black bells. I have two and don't really wear anything else. Oops.
